Default Updating an old system

Hey guys,

Guess I posted in the wrong place and it was suggested I go here. I just picked up a '93 Classic with 8,600 miles on the clock! Bike has obviously been sitting most of it's life so I am going to go through it, one thing I would like to do is get rid of the cheesy cassette radio and upgrade to something newer. It looks like most places that actually offer a complete kit only go back to around '96 so I'm guessing things changed at that point? I don't mind if it isn't exactly plug and play and I have to do some re-wiring but I'd like to find something that fits and works, any suggestions?

I have a '88 and replaced the cassette player in mine. The install was pretty simple though as long as you have a wiring diagram for you bike. The toughest part was getting the outer fairing off so that you can access everything. I also added a Metra ASWC-1 so I could still use my handlebar controls. The wiring diagram really helps with this.

Thanks for the reply! That's good to know about using that kit for the handlebar controls. I have an old factory manual so it should have all the electrical schematics in it. Do you know if there is any physical difference in the fairings between our older bikes and the '96-up? Or is it just basically harness connections? I would assume most any single DIN radio would fit? Wondered if anyone had recommendations, thinking marine radio for weather resistance?

I'm sure there are some physical differences. Yes any single DIN radio will fit. You don't need a mounting bracket. The metal bracket that the new radio slides in will fit in the opening from the old radio. I put a marine grade in mine. Mostly because I thought it would handle the vibration better.

Marine doesn't mean waterproof. Just throwing that out there. Can't offer any help on your year model other than that.

Yeah I know it's more like "weather-resistant", but I think it would be more suitable than something meant to sit inside a nice dry climate controlled car...
