Default Synthetic gear oil in "93 Sportster

Hey guys. I'm working through getting this old Sportster ready for many miles of riding this summer. I have no idea how old the primary oil is so am changing it. The Harley parts guy said he would not recommend putting the new Harley synthetic gear oil in this model. Has anyone out there used it in an old model Evo Sportster? Seem like if it is good for newer one's it should be good for all. Ride Safe.

The reason is the synthetic for some reason finds the weak spots in the gaskets on bikes broken in on non synthetic.

Have a 97 WG and use synthetic with no problems.

Putting synthetic oil of any kind in a 93 Sportster is as useless as using Premium fuel in it (if the engine is stock).

Hell, I would go with regular ol' gear oil in the trans, ATF in the primary, Castrol GTX 20W-50 in the oil bag.

'94 and '98 currently using synthetic with no leaks. Not sure where you got your info.

Edit: Ooops, guess we started another oil thread.

Synthetic oils don't cause leaks, they expose them. As your engine ages, the engines seals age and change. Somtimes with using dino oils, their is a build up on them. When you put a high detergent synthetic in like Mobil 1, Amsoil/RL etc, it will clean spots that were plugging up potential leaks. With a Synthetic blend, you probably don't have to worry too much about this. The % of synthetic in blends is very small. I personally would just stick with dino oil being they are better then ever now. If your not extending drains, I don't see the point.

The guy asked a question. Ya, it's been beaten to death but if we had something better to do we wouldn't be here.
