Default We Lost Another One

This afternoon (5/18/19) in Indianapolis, a neighbor was out riding with his buddy. The buddy was the lead bike when a SUV made a left turn in front of them; the lead rider had no time to react, hit the SUV, and was killed.

The driver, a lady, wasn't even arrested or charged. In Indiana, it's open season on motorcyclists. Kill one, and nothing will happen to you.

This needs to change, right now.

Arrests for vehicular manslaughter usually come after the crash investigation is complete. Arrests at the scene of a fatal don't occur unless the driver is DUI.
The reason is because LEO's have 48 hrs to file charges through the district attorney after making an arrest. Fatal investigations cannot be completed in 48 hrs.
And ticketing the driver at the scene is a no-no. Driver pleads guilty to a left turn right of way infraction and when LEO's later file criminal charges , the driver can claim "double jeopardy" and have the case dismissed. .

Damn... Sorry to read this. Not that it's a excuse for what happened but, looks to be another case of, "I didn't see them"...

Was it just the two of them, I know that IndyWest, and Indianapolis Harley Davidson had rides scheduled for yesterday. I was out at IndyWest late yesterday morning, there were quite a few bikes/riders waiting for the ride to start.

Yes, just the two of them. NE Side, not connected to any ride.

I met the rider a couple of times. He wore way too much black for my taste.

Listen to ABATE. Wear Hi-viz.

Something similar happened to me four years ago. A 17 year old kid driving his moms car pulled right out in front of me, I had no place to go to I hit the side of the car. He got a careless driving ticket. I broke a vertebrae in my back and broke my ankle.
There was a law suit. I just got my settlement. I got some money but my ankle will never be right.

Younger kid, no spouse. His parents will have to file. His dad is a Goldwing rider and had to show up with his truck to pick the bike up off the road.

More than likely, the dad is going to be kicking himself forever on getting his kid into bikes.
