Hey guys. I went to replace my front tire on my 77 FX. Thinking it was a tubeless tire, I purchased an Avon Cobra chrome whitewall only to find out when I went to take the tire off that it's tubed and the inside of the rim looks like crap. It's all rusted up and I don't think I want to stick with this rim. It's an off-brand rim, a Yunta 1.85 x 21. I didn't install this rim, it came with the bike when I bought it. What I'd like to do is replace the front rim with a 2.15 x 21 in a tubeless rim. The hub width measures 6 and 5/8. I'd like to go with chrome and maybe black spokes. Recommendations would be appreciated.... thanks Bob...

 

Tubeless spokers are Expensive...and don't always hold air reliably!!
Just run a tube... no Biggie..
Somebody liked the power-washer...or... maybe assembled Wet for some reason...

 

If you are going to run spokes consider using stainless. Lot less work and they won’t rust.

 

The rust on the inside of the rim actually flaked up about an eighth of an inch in some places. I took a welding pic and try to knock most of it off, man this thing just really looks like s*** and if I ever went to adjust the spokes forget about it, that's never going to happen. So I think I'm just going to replace the rim. Probably still going to go with a regular rim cuz you're right about the tubeless, they get expensive...

 

^^^ Yea... I don't like that one much...and I am a true COB... still would look for another rim... but on a SuperGlide... 19" for me...
21" have a use... but, Not on My SuperGlide!!!
Now... If ya could find some Original Morris Mags... but, I still run a Tube in those old originals!!!!

 

Actually I found a link for what claims be true Morris mag 7 spoke 2.15 x 21", they are nice but then I got to try to find one for the rear and that's almost impossible any suggestions there?

 

Not really... I saw atot of them back in the day with broken or wallowed out Sprocket adapters... Some people didn't use loctite then I guess..
Makes the 16" a Rare find... But, a 21" Morris, with an adapter for the Cloverleaf Rotor is another rare find... Someone used a non Standard 21" rim [Not typical HD anyway] with a Harley hub adapter... Cool... but uncommon!!! Not a good scenario if yer in a Hurry surely...
If ya wanted to shop, yet finish a riding season... reassemble that raggedy wheel, with new rim strip and best quality tube you can find [good luck with that too] Wouldn't scare me ... but... Again... I may be a COB!!!!

 

The general rule is ALWAYS run rim strip and tube on all spoke wheels.

I once bought fat spoke wheels for my other bike which was designated as tubeless and it went flat overnight. Installed a rim strip and tube, no more issues.

I believe with any wheel other than original, you need to consider rotor fitment, same axle size, proper alignment/spacing.

 

Agree with Race....had mag wheels on my original 1980 Ironhead and the mag leaked like it had pores. Ran rim strip and tube...no more issues.

 

you could wire wheel brush it then use the pink $hit to remove rust couple days keep adding more then wash wire brush again - ( we also glass bead the wheel as well ) then paint it with rustolem primer 2 coats - then I use gorilla duct tape fitted to the center then the rim strip and the tube - its a re pop so all the labor out lives the value of that rim

throw it away and get a new one

some of the antique machines with the -1940 rims we see that and you cant buy new so we fix best possible as they are mostly furniture
