Proper Size Hilicoil for Thread Repair

Proper Size Hilicoil for Thread Repair
Gentlemen,
I need a bit of help,
I have stripped the threads from a rocker arm bolt (not sure how but the threads came out with the bolt !??!).
Now I need the proper bolt and thread size in writing. The manual calls the rocker arm bolts "bolt" with no definition like 1/4, 3/8 ths, 5/16 ths etc so I am not sure what size or thread type this is.
I intend to add a Hilicoil insert to fix the issue but can not walk into the shop without some knowledge of the size I need.
Does anyone know the proper size?
I could walk into the shop with the bolt but they will ask what size I need? so its best to educate myself before I go in.
Regards to all,
David

You can view/download the 2008 Sportster Parts Manual at the Harley Service Information Portal for free-
https://serviceinfo.harley-davidson....cle/lookupForm
Here is the 2008 Sportster Parts manual-
https://serviceinfo.harley-davidson....2008+Sportster
Find the part number for your bolt, then search the document for the part number.
The last (normally) hit on the part number will usually give the bolt/nut type and dimensions.
These are listed in the Hardware List of the manual.
1039 SCREW 5/16-18 X 2-1/2 hex flange head (Grade 8)

Although helicoils are often used as repairs, that isn't their intended use. There are other brands of repair inserts available, which may be more suitable. I certainly suggest finding a competent local shop who does thread repairs and ask their advice. On my shovelhead, many years ago now, I suffered two stripped threads in my heads, neither of which was suitable for an insert and had them welded up and rethreaded - with helicoils!
