Default gas smell at end of a ride, Gen 1 M8, 2024 FLHP 114

I had the tank off maybe 10 days ago to change spark plugs, but buttoned everything up with no issues, and rode it about 75 miles a couple of days later with no issues.

Two days ago I rode about 150 miles, returned home, parked in the garage and could smell gas, but couldn’t see any gas. The quick connect at the base of the tank was dry.

I opened the garage to let it air out, and then closed it. About an hour later the smell was gone and hasn’t returned for two days while the bike sits idle.

I inspected the bike with a bright flashlight at the time, and then again later. I can’t see any evidence of a leak. I’m going to take it for a ride today and see if this repeats itself.

Any ideas in the meantime? Thanks in advance.

Since it had to be disconnected, wild guess would be the vent line/hose?

After the ride did you top off the tank before parking it?
Gas will emit more fumes sitting over a hot engine and the fumes will come out the vented gas cap or tube, whatever vent your model has.

Thanks for the replies fellas. I did not disconnect the vent line. When I took the tank dash off I pulled the hose out of the bowels of the frame where it vents to atmosphere down below, while still connected to the dash, so I *think* I am good there.

I had a half a tank when I parked, but it was 87 degrees outside, and I had to sit for a while at one long stop sign in traffic a couple of miles from home, late in the afternoon, so the bike was gootnhot when I parked.

This sounds like a likely culprit.

Edit to add: I have a pretty strong fan that I have aimed at the bike when I park when it’s really hot out, more so to cool off the bike so it doesn’t bake the inside of the garage when I close the door, but I didn’t do so that day. I think I’ll start doing that again.

Mine does it esp in super hot oper conditions.
It's just heat off eng heating gas tank and fumes venting off. I park in my garage and I too put a box fan on floor pointing at bike. Cools it off pretty quick and smell goes away.

My 22 has always done that since new. Funny how the last few dozen bikes I’ve owned never has.
