        Default Any way to soften up a leather jacket?

        Got a nice leather jacket and the fit is great, but it's so stiff, when I sit on the bike, it damn near strangles me. I have to keep pulling it down and trying to tuck it. Anyway to soften these things up? (like drag it behind the bike for a hundred miles)

        "like drag it behind the bike for a hundred miles"

        That would probably help . . . . some.

        Since you asked;

        Rub the jacket for one entire day with liver, fat, or the brain of a deer to soften the skin, leave it 2 or 3 days (according to the season or extreme temperature) until the grease soaks in, then they dry it at a slow fire, constantly beating or rubbing it meanwhile with a stone until it becomes uniformly soft and pliable.

        As soon as the jacket has been prepared in the manner described above and is quite dry, begin the fatiguing process of rubbing it around a taut rope of horsehair or braided leather to make it smooth.

        Jackets are placed in the final stage of preparation over a slow fire covered with green sprays of sumac and smoked. This process will insure the jacket suffer less injury from water, and retain for quite a while the smell of smoke, which repels flies, mosquitoes and moths.

        Wear it... it'll break in just fine.

        But, if you're in a hurry and want it to look and feel well-worn now

        I use Fiebing products - work great to soften (saddlesoap or mink oil) & protect (snow proof).

        I heard that some guys in the army during WW1 used to **** in their boots and leave them over night to soften the leather you could try that if you can live with the smell, and dont mind riding at the back down wind on any ride outs that you may go on.

        Someone told me that you can rub conditioner into it and tumble it in the dryer with no heat on the air dry setting. Don't know if it will work because all my leather is old and been worn.
