150mm to 200mm rear tire
Here is my question; i want to put a 200mm rear tire on my 04 softail,has anyone done this out here? If so can you please tell me how and pictures would be great.

This can be accomplished with all stock HD parts, with the exception of a custom set of external fender struts for the '06 or '07 fender of your choice. Additionally, you have to be willing to cut the factory internal fender struts off of the frame. I just finished the conversion on my '02 Softail.
I used Custom Struts, which while a bit pricey, are designed to work with the stock HD fender for the 200 mm tire. You'll need at least a 5.5" rear wheel for the 200, diameter is your choice depending on which wheel style, design you choose to go with.(An 18" diameter wheel makes the conversion alot easier.) You'll need to have at least 1/8" machined off of your caliper outboard axle face, and possibly 1/8" more out of the anti-rotation slot. This allows you to move the tire/wheel assembly into the center of the swingarm, by adding 1/8"-3/16" to the left side fo the wheel. This also helps minimize how much potential shimming you have to do between the brake caliper and wheel to maintain center position in the caliper. You'll need to convert to the new style narrow belt/pulley for tire clearance.I used a Weld Recluse wheel and pulley. I had to install a 7/16" spacer between the wheel and the pulley to develop the necessary clearances between belt and tire, belt and swingarm. Top belt guard will work with little to no adjustment. Bottom belt guard will have to have 5/16" - 3/8" machined off the edge toclear sidewall of tire. Lastly, the new '06 HD fender can be had from HD for approx. $150.00. You'll need a new seat that fits the contour of the new '06 fender, and then there's the paint and final finish work to match the rest of your tin work. I've done several of these conversionsthat I have described in this post and I assure you that the clearances are better than the stock HD '06 - '07 clearances and the look, when the bike islowered is killer. Sure there are expenses to be considered here, but I've also used the $$$$$$ aftermarket kits as well. I like using the stock HD parts, personally. You don't have to use a high dollar aftermarket kit to achieve a 200mm conversion. With some advanced planning, measuring and creativity, anyone competent with a wrench is capable of accomplishing this mod. V1 |

I did a 180 on my '02.Used a 9" strutless fender, an 18x5.5 wheel with a Deuce hub and a Metzeler 180.Use an Avon 180 then you won't have to space anything..Had to cut the fender struts off, wire a new brake/tail light and turn signals.The rest of it is stock.Pulley, rotors, caliper and belt.

Would the stock pulley and tire off an 06 work with the clearances you describe? I would hope so, but so, but would rather be sure. Also, what impact switching to the narrower belt up front? Need to make any changes there? |
