tbone the new guy with fatboys questions
Hey everyone,
thanks for having me, trying to figure the site out we'll see how I do. I have an "07" fatboy, just had cams put in and thunderheader exhaust. Had to get that stock exhaust out of my way. I want to put some real bags on it not those baby ones they offer for the stock model. Any ideas? I wanted to raise my bars or put new bars on to get my hands about shoulder height. My buddy has an older fatboy he said he put a set of ultra classic bars on without having to change all his cables just a little bend mod on his brake line. Trying to find some cost savings with this the cams and exhaust set me back a bit ! Lol |

Are you looking for Hard bags or leather?

I have some non-HD saddle bags on my bike. Bought them from a leather shop online about 10 years ago.

Have an 03 Fatty here and as far as the handlebars, I had, early on put some heritage bars with 4" risers on mine and that got my hands higher. Ultimately I went with 14 1/2" CycleSmiths 1 1/4" apes with the stock risers and that puts my hands right at shoulder height. I'm 6'1" tall. Hope that helps a bit.

Here is my 2011 with 14" Ape's and Boss saddlebags which hold 40 cans of beer per side.

Welcome, I don't think you can go anywhere else to get better advice than this site. I have 14", 1.5" carlinis with a 1" riser and its at my shoulders. Im 5'10" sober, 6'2" when Patron is around! My advice? Never say or do "costs savings" when you do anything on your bike. Most here will tell you it will come back to bite you in the A$$ every time!

I also have Boss bags good product and they offer several different sizes...easy to take on and off when you dont want them on...Had them for 9 Years and still look good...The nice thing is when your on a trip they are easily removed and carried into you room so the contents are safe..

I'm open to either hard or leather I just hated those smallish bags they have for the fatboy when you have the stock exhaust, and didn't want to spend $800.00 on a set of bags. The other thing was fitment, I was told the police bags worked off an electraglide. So looking for options.

Well that wasn't quite what I meant, I just put some s&s 585cams in and the thunderheader exhaust, powercommander, because I couldn't afford the thundermax right this minute and had it dynotuned. It's just that the fatboy and bags seems a little particular as to what works on it without a bunch of customizing, but I'm hearing different versions of what bags will fit up without to much work that's why I came here. Same with the bars a buddy got it done without dumping a bunch of money, if I have to I have to I just need to find out. If I could just swap a set of bars and not do all the cable work I would like to, everything the harley dealership says is nope going to have to spend $700.00 but bikers usually have a few different versions to that answer, that's why I'm here. What I want is usually bigger than the old wallet.

Have a look see at Carlini's handlebars, I installed the Freeway bars on my '05 along with the piston risers, didn't have to mod the wiring harness nor the cables. Their 10" apes is my next route which means swapping cables and adding to the wiring harness, another expense and time consuming but end result will be worth it. Do remember to get those turn signals off the handlebars...heheh
B&R is another option for handlebars, he does have a waiting period though. His bars are considered to be one of the best on the market. Fox Creek would be my choice for leather bags, his leather gets quite a bit of respect. |

Took your advice, went with a set of Carlini freeway bars, still looking at bags going to check out some Lutz Leathers bags a buddy showed me a set he had they looked nice.
As far as installing Apes I spent less the $500 to do mine my self. That includes the bars, wire extensions,Magnumshilding cables, new poly bushings and trans cover gasket. |
