2005 Night train 180mm tire
I have read a million posts on being able to change my 2005 train to a rear wheel 18x5.5 and max 180mm tire without making any mods. I have bought both, mounted the tire and there is no way that this will fit. Do I need to use a 4.25" rim instead of 5.5? I hate the look of the narrow wheel. Any help please?!?!

Is there any design difference between the 2005 and the 2007 NT?
I just installed an 18x5.5 wheel with a 200 series tire on my 2007 and it fit just fine. The problem might be with your tire selection. I specifically chose a Metzler 200-50-18 tire based on feedback from other members who had already done the trial & error routine.
Here 's a pic of the result. The fit is tight, but there's zero contact...

Yeah 2007 came from the factory with a 200 ...2005 had a 150.

A 4.25 x18 will go in there with a 180 /55 Shinko tire but will be extremely tight. You only have 7.25 in between the fender rails. You need the low profile on the tire even with a 4.25 rim. You’ll need to use capsule nuts and will need some help with a porta power on the struts to spread them where they leave the frame. I’ve gotten a 1/4” with the porta power on several bikes with no fender damage.
I run a 160/15 under my 05 . It fills the fender up.
