Of course there is. Oil pulls heat from the heads primarily, as they are the "heat producers." The hotter the heads get, the hotter the oil will be. After a while of riding, the oil may get hotter than the heads for some of the time, as the heads will shed heat faster as long as air is flowing over them, where the oil will "heat soak" and take longer to shed its heat.

I noticed this too which is why I installed an oil cooler. Both oil and head temps are lower after the oil cooler was installed.

Good move. In hot climates, every little bit helps!

Y'know, I've been drag racing an air cooled VW for a long time, and the same principles apply. Now drag racing temps don't get all that hot until it gets to the late rounds and runs are being made within minutes of the last. The heads get HOT and so does the oil. I've seen head temps of nearly 400°, and oil temps at nearly 250°. I've actually burned up a fresh motor in order to win the next round and the overall event.

I've seen some report head temps on their bike of about 220° and oil temps of 230-240° after a ride on a hot day. But I have to wonder where the head temp sensor is. I'd bet cash money the core head temp is well over 300-350 when the oil temp is that hot, which is still within the head materials ability to survive. I know for a fact that VW aluminum heads will start to "decompose" once the temps get above 550°.
