It's been a few weeks, I have been travelling a lot with work so no time on the boards, or the bike for thatmatter. That is until this weekend. Me and two buddies took a 4 day 1800 mile round trip from Texas to Chattanooga, TN and back through Hot Springs, AK. Had a great time. The bike ran great. Only thing I noticed was a couple times, after riding for a few hundred miles my fuel pump would make a kind of hissing sound. It was lounder than the normal "buzzing" sound that it always makes. It seemed to be functioning fine, no rideability issues. Just a different sound. It always returned to normal after sitting forseveral minutes or so. My buddy said it may be due to vapor getting in the pump and not to sweat it.
Any ideas? May have it looked at since I am still under warranty, but I am going to ROT Ralley in Austin this weekend, so I won't take it in until next week.
I don't know what year bike you have or how many miles are on it. My fuel injected '03 Heritage did the same thing at about 20K miles. Dealer said there was an in tank filter, a pick up tube and a return tube inside the tank. 20K service called for filter replacement and they found the pick up tube was defective. Replaced the filter and pick up tube and all was well.
i worked as a hd techfor 4 years and it sounds like awear hole in the hose inside your gas tank..happens alot..if you take the gas cap off and put your ear near the tank turn the key on to cycle the pump..if itis hissing you have a hole..some times you can even see it spraying inside the tank....you need to fix it asap..good luck cj
If it is a hole in the hose, then why would this only happen after I have ridden for a while and the bike is hot. It seems to stop after the bike sits and cools. thanks
Could be that the tank vent is blocked. Next time it does that, take off the filler cap while the engine is still running. If the tank isn't venting, you will hear air rush in when the cap is loosened and it will stop hissing.
Spoke to the dealer, they can't get me in until next week. I am going to ROT Ralley in Austin, TX this weekend, so I will see how the bike runs and may take it in next week.
Started out to ROT Ralley today and the noise from the fuel pump was even worse so I took it to a dealer by my brother-in-laws house. I explained the noise to the guy and he was like "oh sounds like a hole in the fuel pump hose". We walked outside, he listened and started the bike, he nodded his head as if to say, "Yep!!! That's it!!!". He then rode the bike back in the shop, and I watched him and a couple other dudes put their heads to the tank and crank the bike. They all kinda looked around and then he came and told me "well, we all agree that it sounds good, here ya go!". I was pissed, b/c now when the pump cycles it sounds like someone is spraying a water hose in my tank.
On my way home, I took it to a dealer close to my house and got the guy to listen, he then filled out a work order and took the bike for a test ride. I left b/c he said he was not sure when they could get to it. I only know he test rode it b/c he was leaving the parking lot at the same time I was. He called me about 2.5 hours later and left me a voicemail saying the bike is ready. Not sure what they did, but I guess I will find out on Monday.
Got the bike back from Longhorn HD in Grand Prairie, TX today. They replaced the pickup hose in the tank due to it having a hole. Bike ran great all the way home, no more hissing. They treated me well and more importantly they fixed the problem under my warranty.

I had the same problem on my 05 deuce. After they fixed it it happened again. The second time they put the line in a sleeve. This fixed it. So if it comes back remember this post.
