#5and #4 fluid do NOT mix...two different kinds of fluid there. #4 and #3 fluid DO mix and the only difference is boiling point...unless your road racing or planning to roast your brakes over a fire you've got nothing to worry about using #4/#3 fluids. On my '06 I have a mix of #4 and #3 in my rear brake lines now (ran out of #4 while bleeding and had to use a bit of #3 to top off) and I have had NO ill effects at all in over 4,000 miles of hot/cool/cold weather riding.
Agreed, 3 & 4can mix, but never mix 5 with either. If you do wish to switch from 5 to 4, or 4 to 5, you really need to replace the seals in the master and caliper as well.

OK, this thread looks like it has died out, but now I've got a question about the same issue. 2006 Heritage, with DOT 4 from the factory. I just bought chrome controls, including the master cylinder, and there's a sticker that says use DOT 5. I assumed that this applied to the older bikes, and had planned on sticking with the4 because of availability and price. But in reading this thread, I see where MICHALISLARNACA says in his post that4 will eat chrome as well as paint. Does that mean I'm going to wind up with a brake system full of dissolved chrome if I use 4? Anybody else running 4 in their chrome master cylinder?

Thanks!
Jeff
