Default Progressive Suspension 422 Series Shocks

the bike is a 1998 fatboy softail . I have installed the Altima shocks chrome I got off ebay and they are garbage I bottom out all the time over bumps and bounce around . I read that the progressive suspension 422 series shocks come in 2 forms the reg and heavy duty . The Heavy Duty Applications are recommended for bikes that are operated at or near the manufacturer's maximum load rating over 50% of the time. I weigh 240 plus my riding gear my bike I read is 705 pounds wet . I added lots of chrome plating to my stock parts . I am sure it not much more than 5 pounds if that . I need to know what the maximum load rating for my 1998 fatboy and if i should go with the heavy duty ones thank you for any input...

Yeah Jeff, you want the HDs. I put them on mine and only weigh 160. It rides a little stiff for solo, but not when loaded down with camping gear. Also, when I replaced them, the works performance shocks were locked up, so I was riding a hardtail, so the ride improvement was good.

I put the 422's with RAP(Remote adjustable preload) on my 16 Deluxe and the Progressive monotubes up front, both lowered 1 inch, the ride was so much better, and no nose dive on hard braking, Mine are standard weight springs but at the weight you are running I would go heavy duty. Just my 2 cents. Happy New Year, Ride Safe.

My weight is 200lbs and I went with the standard 442's with monotubes up front on the fatboy . I have it set to max height...2 inches in play...and love the handling and performance. Unless you are riding two up a lot I think the standard version would suite you well.

I have some 422's I'm installing but I can't find a baseline for initial settings for them. The stock HD say something like 1 turn out up to 220, 2 turns out up to 260 or something like that...what do you guys use?

I went with the Heavy Duty and set them on the slightly lighter side. No regrets

Use the OEM procedure then tweak it from there.
