Default 08 Custom Transmission Issue

I picked up a high mileage bike for my wife to get back into riding. The price was right for the mileage and the previous owner was a machinist and took great care of the bike.

I just dropped it off at a local dealership to have tires installed. Typical they called back and it needed wheel bearings and brakes. Since it was there and my wife was wanting to start riding I was fine with the additional work.

Now this is where it goes off a bit. I am not new to stealerships but I have a hard time with this one. They just called and said the transmission main bearing is out and wont last the season. They can't just replace the bearing since it is an obsolete part and want a full tear down and rebuild. To the tune of $1600 on top of the current bill.

Now they claim they can hear this by spinning the tire. Is this possible? Bike has 80k miles on it, engine rebuilt at 60k by previous owner. I will get the bike tomorrow but want to know if A) It is possible to hear this by spinning the tire, and B) If it is best options for repair?

Thanks in advance
Colin

Update - Shop called back to explain. They are quoting a full gear set due to mileage, no looking just at the mileage they want to replace everything.

Called a second HD shop that I have had do some light work on my Road Glide. This is there take.

1) Bearing could be heard but would be very hard to hear by spinning the tire. It is normally only heard if the engine is running. Want some tests preformed by me to verify.
2) Head mechanic can't see needing new gears at this mileage. Can't verify till it is apart.
3) Head mechanic said you can't hear if it is the IPB bearing or 6th gear bearing. Only way to tell is test the IPB bearing.

Worst case they said $1300, best case is just the IPB.

I have almost 135,000 miles on Reaper's original 5 speed transmission, which has sat behind a built to the **** engine, operated by a heavy throttle hand, and it's working just fine. I've never heard of replacing a gear set for any reason other than serious internal damage.

Sounds like the first shop thinks you don't have a clue, and will pay for whatever they think they can scam you for. Good on you for getting a second opinion. If you're concerned that something may really be in need of repair, I would go to the second shop, and let them have a look/listen, if I were you.

Cheers!

I trust dealers about as far as I could throw them. Do you trust them? Proven fact that 50% are outright crooks. Rest, the mechanic is just trying to make a living off of you. If it rode and sounded OK, I would go get it as is with out tires and never look back. You can fill the transmission with belt off rear wheel and belt pushed fdw off front drive and with clutch hub off. Then you can turn the input shaft and check up thru gears for smoothness and fill. Only way I can fill anything like an almost bad bearing
If he is just spinning tire thru belt, it would have to be pretty bad to fill anything.

Obviously, at 60K rebuild, that is either smoke or owner flogged it pretty hard to make it need it. My 04 with 50K runs like new

It needed tires. The PO gave me a brand new set of Michelin's for the bike. He just had a heart attack and wasn't going to be riding as much. This was his pride and joy. Granted it could still need work.

Now on to dealers...I always give them something stupid simple to test them. Tires is one of those things. They have lost my business just on the tires alone. It started with how Dunlops are the best tires and they had a sale going. Then my tires are old and not up to par (brand new). Even the date code was fine.

We just moved to Oregon and in the process I lost the last shop I trusted. Before that I had one till the owner passed away. I need to find a good independent shop that I can trust. The other HD dealership has done alright so far so I risked taking into the local one (instead of 30 miles)
