Clutch cable Issues..

Hello everyone,

After a handlebar change and a clutch adjustment which ended up having to change the clutch hub and entire clutch pack itself, I've been dealing with a new issue...

In a 91 FXSTC Softail Custom, with a BDL Competitor clutch, after doing a clutch adjustment twice already, after I drive the bike for a couple of days to a week, the clutch cable is getting loose and the friction zone moves back to the point where there's no more tension and I can't change gears anymore..

Any ideas what may be going on? Doing a clutch adjustment sort of fixed the issue temporarily but then it comes back and leaves me stranded not being able to change gears or coming back the next day to find the clutch cable being completely loose..

Has anyone had this issue before and what could be the culprit? could it be the transmission gears going bad or where the clutch cable connects to the transmission? Kinda lost and my mechanic has no idea either..

Thanks in advance.

When you adjust the clutch, are you having to screw the clutch hub screw in a little more or is it the adjustment of the cable.

Hub screw - bad throwout bearing.

Cable adjustment - bad cable.

I read your post- and are you saying that overnight or from one ride to the next, your cluch cable is suddenly loose? If so- are you sure someones not f-ing with your bike? Sounds strange.....

He said he changed handlebars....sounds like bad or cheap cable.

This is the second time it’s happening.

First time it did it after a week of riding after the handle bar change and BDL clutch installation.

The first time I thought it was a clutch adjustment on the clutch and cable and while adjusting to tighten it i heard a click when pushing the lever all the way in and it got loose again... then overtigthened the connection to the transmission assembly and broke the cable so got a brand new magnum shielding one. Had my mechanic replace the cable yesterday, rode for a bit then today on my way to work it got loose again.

Brand new cable in a in a brand new clutch after being adjusted twice (in the clutch itself and the cable after.

I'm with Max, Upon initial replacement op didn't adjust clutch properly and took out the through out bearing....

Throw out bearing or clutch nut loose.
