Heat Shield
That Pingle petcock was a hurry up job done in the rain and I never went back to the carb nipple to cap and get that hose out. I plugged the end......folded the end over and tie wrapped it so I may have a little vacuum leak.
All the responses I get here give me knowledge.
Does it make sense that it would be electrical even though every time it happens I am rolling on the throttle? It can be doing 40 mph with a little throttle roll, a little throttle coming to a stop, or a little roll starting from a light.
The throttle is always involved, she gives a little swish sound in the carb then shuts down as I am rolling the throttle. I can set her on the jiffy and she will idle forever without a burp.
on a little family vacation now but my hands cant wait to get home and fix her up

There's only one way to tell for sure......
Next time it fails, check to see if you have spark....

So once I replaced it I never had it happen again nor has the owner this was 4 years ago.
Worth looking into for sure.
I replaced the stock coil with a Daytona coil, so far the problem has disappeared. Perhaps more riding will prove success or not.
I am going to replace the relay suggested by Viper once I find a replacement as well.
Thanks.....you guys are great!
Installing the coil took 15 minutes.....getting the small screw holding the coil cover on took 2 hours. I guess any fastener in for 22 years can be tough coming out but I was tougher than the screw.
Finally had time to put on substantial miles and happy to report the new coil not only stopped the shutdowns but seems to have given the old girl new pep.
Thanks for all the suggestions.....especially Viper Harley and Hatitude
