Wire on bottom side of fuel tank
Hello,
In the picture attached you will see a yellow, orange, and black wire coming out of the fuel tank. I am switching the components out of my original tank into a new tank of the same year and model. I am not having any luck figuring out what it is. More importantly, how the heck do I transfer it to another tank and maintain whatever seal the tank has around that opening? I am guessing I will have to cut it, but then what???? Please help! Also, if you have any tips about getting the fuel pump out of the tank, I would love to hear that as well.

It comes from the left side fuel gauge.
The wires go through a small pipe that runs from the cavity below that left side gauge and out the bottom of the tank, passing through the tank.. Those wires start at the the back of the fuel gauge, run through the pipe out the bottom of the tank, and to a connector along the left side of the frame backbone under the tank.
You didn't give any info on the year/model or gas v EFI, but it looks like a 2003 tank.. so I just pulled up a 2003 Heritage... they all are basically the same in regards to the fuel gauge wires...
This shows the left side fuel gauge.. #23 is for a carb, with #13 & #11 as the connector and wires you are looking at. #24 is for an EFI Bike, again with #13 & #11 as the wires & connector you are looking at.
Your best bet is to de-pin and re-pin when changing that part... Be careful not to bend a pin... it is a common problem when reconnecting that connector and can lead to a faulty fuel gauge reading..
