Default RE: Handlebar removal question

You need to remove the console so that you can unplug the wiring harnesses from it. If you dont the console will be in the way when you try to move the tank and you run the risk of scratching the tank or console. I just put a set of street slammers on my 07 Train and a lot of these guys will tell you that you don't have to remove the tank to get to the switch connectors however I tried to just move the tank and there was no way on mine. the connectors were cliped onto the frame and I had to remove the tank completely to get at them. I also found that a throttle return spring with the hook cut off of one end worked perfectly for disassembling the molex connectors.

Default RE: Handlebar removal question

Sometimes there just are no shortcuts. Center console needs to be removed to remove speedometer and ignition wire harness. Connections under the tank were strapped to the frame on my bike so I had to remove the tank. Tank removal also requires disconnecting fuel crossover hose which I thought was the most difficult part of doing the internal wiring project. Fuel either needs to be drained or holes plugged or your going to have gasoline everywhere. Fuel line is easy to remove, under tank left side.

Read this it may help: Internal wiring

What ever you do cover the front fender with a thick towel cause you don't want to drop a tool on it.

PhantomMaxx is right, the crossover hosedisconnect can cause fuel to spill all over and cause a very dangerous situation. Do not do this crossover hose disconnect near any open flame, electric heater, etc. Even with just a little gas left in the tank , gas will run out both ends when you disconnect the hose.Take precautions to collect that left over fuel if you are removing the tank.I just changed out 16" apes that came on my used 2005 Heritage Classic and installed the stock bars. This change over did require 7.25" cut from the 12 wire leads that feed the handlebarswitches. Clutch cable, throttle cables and brake hose were also changed back to stock. For me it was a 10-12 hour job, but I took my tiime and had fun with the replacement.
