The only downfall I see with a springer is trying to keep the spring coils clean and the rust off the chrome (I don't own one, but it looks like a PITA). The skinny tire is only really a hasle in deep gravel, on the road it is just fine.

I just ordered a 2006 FXSTS and I am waiting for it to come in. I was unsure of what I wanted and debated for about 3-4 years. I thought about and researched Orange County Choppers (piece of crap), Big Dog, American Iron Horse, but I think I made the best choice by sticking with good old Harley-Davidson. Every year I waited the softails got better and better and the others the same old stuff every production chopper has. Now with the FXSTS I will customize it and make it a one of a kind. Every year there is the Roar To The Shore in Wildwood, NJ. I think I saw hundreds of OCC's, Iron Horses and Big Dogs this pas year but only saw about a hand full of softail springers.

Good Luck!

I appreciate the opinions from all of you. This is a hugh expenditure for my budget, and I already own one bike (Triumph) that is great for solo riding, so two up short trips with the wife (who loves riding) is very important to me. I know each of you probably struggled over which HD to select, because everyone of them has their own character and styling (and they all are virtually the same price). The Dealer cautioned me that the Springer front end would require some maintenance every 10k miles or so, so I needed to consider that. I kinda lucked across the leftover 2005 model. The dealer charges MSRP, but adds $1k to the price for Prep and SHipping. He waived this on the 05 model and it came with 2 tone paint (black cherry and black pearl) and the security system for abour $1300 less that the same 2006 model. I'm off again tomorrow to look at the bike again and may go on ahead and take the plunge. He told me I could take it around the block, but obviously this is not much time on the bike to feel all of its nuances. I'm glad to hear from yall that the bikes skinny tire doesn't create chaos on the handling in grooved or uneven pavements. I'm on the verge of retirement so I know yall can appreciate these types of purchases aren't taken lightly. I really appreciate the opinions of you that own the bikes and can honestly tell me the pluses and minuses of these bikes. The bike mag reviews don't help much.

Its a great bike no doubt. But it's not a tour bike just yet. See..get them to give you free goodies like maintenance and 1000 towards accessories. Stuff Like that. The seat is one of the first things you're going to want to change if you are serious about touring. The sundowner is a great place to start. It's like 200-300 bucks. You may want saddlebags to carry extra "wifey" stuff... Those can be anywhere around 300-1000 depending on features and who makes it. Then there is the detachable sissy bar etc. All of this stuff to make your wife and you more comfortable for those longer rides.... the list goes on and on.

For a few thousand more you can have a softail heritage classic with all this stuff already on it. Don't make my mistake (like others) buy one bike and end up putting 4000 bucks into it to make it a heritage. With a windshield, passing lamps etc etc... Not that I'm knocking the springer... thats a great bike.

the springer look is unique. and if thats what you like go for it... I own a fatboy. and many people say you can buy the heritage which is a fatboy with all the stuff already on it. i disagree....every one has his own take on what a bike should look like ...so enjoy

The springer is a very sharp looking bike. Our local stealer has one with the asphalt paint scheme. Its been there since last spring!I dont know what they want for it,but I`m sure the price is reduced.
