Default 08 Fat Boy Road Trip - Running Hot and Pinging

I have read posts on the high temps the 96ci motor runs.&nbsp\\; I experienced it for myself yesterday.
&nbsp\\;
I took the bike on a 331 mile road trip through AZ yesterday.&nbsp\\; The bike is stock and I am running Amsoil MCV in all three holes.&nbsp\\; The ride involved some hill climbs and temps up to 110.&nbsp\\; Elevation varied from 1200 to 7000 feet.&nbsp\\; I noticed a pinging sound&nbsp\\;when I got on the throttle when the bike was hot.&nbsp\\; This started on the first climb at about 90 degrees.&nbsp\\; Oil temp per dipstick gage hovered around 240 and peaked at 255 when I arrived back home.&nbsp\\; Is pining common in stock form in the hotter weather courtesy of the lean settings?&nbsp\\; If so has the stage one and ecm upload helped with this?&nbsp\\; I am just trying to look at my options.&nbsp\\; You would think a $20k bike would run perfect even in stock form.&nbsp\\;
&nbsp\\;
Thanks for any info.

The bikes are set up lean from the factory. Thank the EPA for that. A set of pipes and fuel management system will help. You are using high octane fuel, right?

Yes I should have mentioned the fuel.&nbsp\\; I always run 91 octane in it.&nbsp\\; I bought the dip stick temp gauge last week to see what my oil temps are.&nbsp\\; It&nbsp\\;seems to be relatively accurate.&nbsp\\; I rode about 50mi of city freeway with air temps in the 70s.&nbsp\\; My oil temp was 215.&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\; The same ride, speed etc, with temps around 110 had the oil temp at 255....whew.&nbsp\\; There was no stop and go traffic in both cases.&nbsp\\; There was a 40 degree change in air temp, and same with the oil temp.&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\; The pinging&nbsp\\;only happned at 1/2 and greater throttle.&nbsp\\; It did not seem to be present cruising at a steady state speed. &nbsp\\;

Yes you would think 20,000 would get you a great American bike but yes you can thank those who pissed off the people in congress and now they are getting back at all bikers with EPA for pollution and sound. I road my bike 3 days and then went to the web and read all about the problem. I put in 99 cents worth of resistors and solved the heat issue until i could afford a stage one with fuel management and a dyno tune. I would have bought the Thundermax first if i had known about it because once it is installed you can add the pipes and breather later and no need for retuning.

You were wise to put the synthetic oil in your crank, 250 degrees would have destroyed conventional oil.&nbsp\\;

I was out today too in AZ. Made the Winkleman loop. I just got the digital oil cap yesterday and mine temped the same as yours with conventional oil. Riding 2 up I didn't notice any pinging. Maybe you got some bad gas?

I have a 2007 Dyna that basically has the same engine. I had pinging problems until I put in a degree colder&nbsp\\;S.E. Plugs #32997-01 and Taylor wires. A hard roll on the throttle and I no longer hear pinging.

My 07 fatty ran hot untill I changed out the pipes ,air filter and installed the SERT.
Also I run SYn oil and my temps came way down.
Unfortunate that you have to spend the money to get it to run correct but thanks to the azzhats in the EPA thats just the way it is.
