Reinstalling my fork sliders seal

I have taken them off and they are at the powder coater along with my hand controls and mirrors.

The articles on here helped me 100% on getting these off and made it very easy.

I am still confused on the PVC pipe installation method of the top rubber gasket.

Do I need to remove the entire forks and slide the pvc over that way because I am confused on how I would get the pvc off once I get the rubber seal back into the lowers.

I found this article which has pictures (I like pictures).
It really looks like the entire fork is removed. Which I have no problem doing.

Mine is obviously a different fork because I don't have the piece they label B.
I guess the fork slider seal label A in pic 26 is what the slide action breaks loose.

The tool they use looks like it is intended for hand power only.

Yep. I'm in the middle of a similar project. I've got the rubber seal in my pocket right now. After work I'm going to Home Depot so I can get the right size pipe. It needs to be able to slide over the bushing and also be able fit in the lower slider just like the seal. Also, the bolt the holds the fork to the triple trees on my Heritage is metric, and it's huge. Your FX is probably different though. My 1 5/16 wrench is too small and my 1 /1/2 wrench is too big. I hate using adjustable wrenches but I am for that bolt.

Metric? You have to look at that all the time, would hate to see it nicked up.
Sorry, I see where you know it is metric. I know they are a little expensive at that size but that adjustable is definitely going to nic the chrome. For all the money you saved by doing it yourself.

Good point. I better go by the house and grab the bolt for comparison too.

the pvc trick can best be used if the forks are out of the trees. it looks like you removed the fork legs and left the tops mounted in the triple trees? If so, remove the tops from the trees and the pvc slides down from the top (otherwise you need to fashion a 2 piece fork seal installer)

p.s. the top bolt is NOT metric. 1 3/8.

I took my forks off my Fatboy to do that job, I couldn't find pcv pipe the correct size to fit over the fork tube and inside the seal pocket so I just took a long enough piece of slightly smaller pcv and used a skill saw and cut it lengthwise so it could expand a little when put over the fork tube to pound the seal in, then I put the spring in last with the top cap, I would think it might be hard to get it all together while still on the bike, compressing the spring and tring to tap the seal in without getting dirt in the slider or knocking the bike off the jack, The fatboy may have a different size fork tube so you may not need to slice open the pcv, Good Luck!

Thanks, its funny they use metric on the bottom and standard at the top.
