Finally finished this project. Been working on this since Thanksgiving. Too many hours to even count. The inspiration came from White Guy's cover. Started w/ a side of veg tan leather and went to work seeing where I could go from there. The wife suggested working w/ wet leather to get a fitted look and shape that will hold. I was a little reluctant to let the leather set on the bike for several days drying. So i covered the frame in that seran cling wrap. I shaped it around the ECM and fram rails. The ECM created a nice box shape - it begged for some carving and stamping. I'm most please w/ how the tank strap came out. I added the buffalo nickel to match my swing arm bag. The guys at Tandy Leather were a big help answering my questions and getting me the right tools. I'm happy w/ the results. It's raining here and I was having trouble getting a decent wide angle w/ the seat on inside my cramped garage. I'll send a few more pics when the weather breaks.
Excellent job! What kind of treament did you give the edges(braided stitching, plain?) How thick is it and what kind did you go with? It's 6 degress here, I wonder how well leather "freeze dries"?
The sun came out so I took some pictures outside so you can see what it looks like with the seat on (3" springs). I added a pic w/ the plastic cover for comparison - this one was when i tried the 2" springs.
Budmeister,
I used 6oz leather. It's pretty thick. Stuff normally used for knife sheaths. It's one piece except on top of the tank strap - I stitched on the decorative piece in the middle. I beveled the edges and used a edge slicker and some tragacanth gum (i think thats what it's called) to give it an edge like a belt would have. The lacing is a straight slit buckstitch. The straight slits make the diamond design when it's laced. It's mostly decorative but it did give the edges some more rigidity and also gave me a way to anchor it down to the frame w/ zip ties.
