Another oil question ?

I have a 2006 Standard. When doing an oil change, what is the best way to ensure that all of the old oil is out of the system before adding the new oil ? Thanks in advance

I think the rogue chopper scavenger system is the way to go if you're willing to drop the money for it.

Or you can try a homemade solution I found in the forum tech section courtesy of taildragger dave:

I just drain from the drain plug and have never had a problem. I think it's more important to do oil changes regularly than to drain all the oil out of the engine too. If this was an issue I think Harley would address it. There is not that much oil left in the engine when the tank has drained. Asked a few friends who are pro wrenchers and they said don't sweat it.

I agree, regular oil changes the key to long engine life, not worrying if you get every drop out. Make sure you change out as soon as you get back from ride when its nice and hot, so the oil flows out freely. I usually let bike lean towards drain hole for a few hours. Never had any issues.;)

If you change your oil regularly don’t worry about it, if not and if your bike is old you could do a 5 qt. change once in a while.

To do it you will have to remove the return line to the tank and route it to a bucket with a hose extension if necessary, then with the bike hot start the bike adding all 5 qts as the oil empties in the bucket.

When the oil is clean stop the motor and let it drain completely. Fill with desired oil and ride.

I use cheap oil to do this and then use good oil upon fill up.

Be careful not to run the bike past 1 qt. for long but don’t worry about it that much it can handle a few seconds at idle. Also don’t rev the motor oil will get everywhere.

I just purchased and extra quart of oil and a cheap filter and made my own scavenger, and saved some money. it's easy to do. when i finished i put on a new filter and topped off.
