remove fuel line from petcock. attach lenght of fuel line to petcock, and go to a 5 gal. gas can. unplug vacum line fron petcock. attach section of "aquarium" air line to vacum port on petcock. turn petcock to reserve. suck on air line to create vacum to open petcock. pinch airline with hemostats. allow tank to drain. remove dash, and unplug wires. remove tank bolts. unplug fuel gague. on the crossover line attach 2 hemostats one near each barb on tank. cut crossover hose. some gas will spill. slide tank rearward and up off frame. if you have a vacum pump it will make draining the tank easier. needlenose visegrips will also work on the crossover line. 5/16 fuel line when you go back together. just short of one foot. i use high pressure clamps (fuel-injection) when i go back together. autozone. hope this helps. steve

Yup, what he said. Have plenty of shop rags handy to clean up any spills.

You can do it by yourself, but I have found it goes a lot smoother with someone helping, especially if they have done it before.

Drain the tank outside your shop or take the crossover line off outside your shop and then push it back inside, trust me on this one. Never take a fuel line loose on a Harley in your garage without a lot of know how. Do it outside and save yourself from having to smell it in your garage the whole time you work on your bike. Trust me

+1 Have had to replace countless tanks at work over the last 12 months and you are gonna spill a little gas pretty much no matter what. On Carb bikes like yours be sure to remember to re-install the small hose behind the petcock (not just the obvious one) when you put the tank back on. Otherwise it can be a little embarassing when the bike dies after about 100 yards. Don't ask me how I know....
