You basically want enough threads sticking through to attach the nut to.
Or you could just use a 3/4" bolt like I did and save yourself some trouble.

Definitely use Loctite, I also used a lock washer.

I went an even simpler route for a clean classic look. I started with the chrome classic round horn cover and had it powder coated gloss black. Looks super clean. Also, check out the Arlen Ness horn cover that is already pre-drilled to accept a points cover of your choice. Both of these covers will only cost about $50.00
