HOW TO add 12 volt accessory power to your softail or any Harley
This is just to help out guys /gals who want to tap into a Fused/ protected ACC circuit to power their GPS, ipod/ mp3's charged your cell phone, etc...
First, locate the fuse box on your bike. Determine where your switched ACC fuse is located. 2nd get a piggy back fuse holder (similar to the pic) from an auto parts store. http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e8...IMAG0483-1.jpg 3rd find a suitable ground (u can use the negative/black terminal of the battery) http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e8...l/IMAG0480.jpg 4th you may need to cut or drill the plastic fuse box cover depending on how you want to route your power wire(see red wire from pic). http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e8...l/IMAG0484.jpg - http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e8...l/IMAG0486.jpg 5th depending on your 12 volt receptacle you bought(mine is a kuryakyn power pod) I hooked mine up on the handlebar, yours may differ. But the red power wire should be hooked up to a 12 volt Fused ACC circuit - like in the previous pics, and ground to ground wire or negative terminal of your battery. http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e8...IMAG0477-1.jpg DONE! The good thing about about this is it will only supply power to your device when you turn IGN switch to ON or ACC. p.s. also works on VRODS! |
Nice work! The photos are great.

Very nice explanation....
Now figure out some way to stop the bozo who tomorrow will start a thread asking how to wire some new 12 volt item without bothering to search the threads for good info like yours...:icon_doh: |

Good, just in time for Sturgis!!
|
Hopefully, someone out there would find this info useful.
Im just glad to share the info, and help a fellow rider. |
very useful tip
|
i just did exactly this. i used a universal 12v port right above my coil under my seat. it is hardly noticeable and it was quck wire routing. that when when in sturgis, i can keep the cell phone on to meet up with friends or stay in touch with home. usually i leave it off when we are there and only turn it on to call home. plus i can keep the tunes charged up.
its a good write up and should help some people. |
Great write up and pics. I was at the dealer yesterday and they now have an aftermarket gizmo for $22.00 that is a plug and play. I will find the name of the company and also post here next time I go there. I asked the guy at the counter and he took me out and he has one on his bike. Not a bad set up and looks good.
