Default New clutch cable. No slack!

I installed a new Chromite II clutch cable today. I got it hooked up to the tranny cover, and everything looked great, but when I went to hook up the lever end, there was not enough cable slack to get it installed into the bracket. The adjustment turnbuckle-or whatever it's called- is collapsed all the way, and there's still not enough slack to get it hooked up. Collapsed fully, It's actually pretty close to my stock cable length, as properly adjusted. Will I be able to adjust the clutch rod enough to make up for this? We're talking an entire lever pull length, which seems a lot to me. I hope some of you good folks can give me the confidence to start cranking on my clutch pushrod, or warn me not to try adjusting it that much.

You need to do the lever end first or it's a major bitch. I did the same thing and used some snap ring pliers hooked to the cable and it's jacket. Did i say that was a MAJOR pain the *** yet?. Next time I'm doing it lever end first.

Ok, I'm sure hooking up the lever end first will allow me to get the cable installed, but should I adjust the clutch rod (inside the derby cover) normally, i.e., keep adjusting the push rod until the lever is collapsed all the way to the grip, then use the cable adjuster to take the slack back up in the lever, or just try to get it adjusted with as little cranking on the pushrod as possible. I'm a little leary of using the pushrod to adjust the clutch that much.

well you close the slack in the cable first then go in the derby and tighten it till is stops then back out half turn then go back to the cable to adjust the lever

Yes, it worked fine doing it that way. I was just a little concerned thst there was such a small amount of slack with the new cable collapsed all the way. I'm used to adjusting it with the lever pulled all the way in, but it was really easier by the book! Thanks Caseyx and DynaBob!
