Ok, I paid attention on the way home and I noticed that there was no difference using the brakes but it did get a little quieter when I used the clutch, so I guess that means its the normal sound of the primary. Odd sound, though.
There are two other sounds. One is like a very small screw came loose and is rattling around, but I only hear that occasionally.
The really weird one is when I have to suddenly stop and pull in the clutch. Its a fast buzzing sound that seems to come from the clutch.
Hi Wabbit, Glad your on the road. The first sound you described is the valve train. The second sound is more then likeley your front pads on the rotor. Im sure when you pull in the clutch you are on the front brake. Ride safe. Mike
I know all those noises are hard to keep track of. Some of it may also be your intake. I know I can sure hear my a/c sucking air. A more open a/c will also give you more audible valve noise. These B motors are even noisier then the A motors. Or maybe you just can't hear them over all the shaking...
I have the rattle sounds as well. Happens typically at higher RPMs and lower gears....
And its louder just after I fill up my tank.
Its the gas cap on mine. Next time you hear the rattle, take your left hand and press down on your gas cap and see if the sound goes away.... If it does, then no need to pay attention to that sound in the future.
Glad to see your back on the road terrorizing the church goers.
Hi Wabbit, good to know you're finally on the road! Wishing you lots and lots of trouble free miles!
I always wear earplugs and full face helmet ... last time I rode and forgot the earplugs I was amazed by the number of rattles, squeaks and other "weird" noises the bike produces. I guess we've all gotten used to the soundproofing of our cars where you don't even hear the motor run anymore that we get worried by the amount of totally normal mechanical noise our our air cooled bikes produce (before it gets drowned out by wind/exhaust noise)

I hear primary occasionally, and also the typical front brake whine (sometimes)
Also your pipes can play games with your ears depending on if its windy or if you have a helmet on...
When I ride behind someone that starts decel, sometimes the noise their bike makes grabs my attention for a second too...
LOL, thanks everyone! It sounds like everything is fine and I don't need to be paranoid now. The bike seems to be running fine. I think I do need earplugs, though. The wind noise after riding to Laconia yesterday left me deafer for an hour or so.
Wabbit Just remember it's a Harley she's gonna make all kinds of noises. You just need louder pipes to hide them all. HaHa. As far as the wind noise try a 3/4 helmet. I have ear problems myself. Burst ear drum a few years ago ear is really sensitive now. Bought a biltwell helmet and fixed the problem.
Those 'sounds' that our Harley's have can drive us crazy. There's been a 'buzzing' sound somewhere on the front of my '02 Heritage since I bought it last year.
It 'buzzes' at about 56 mph. It bugged the hell outa me for awhile. I tried touching everything I could reach while riding trying to find it. I finally gave up and just put up with it, and riding at other speeds so not to hear it. I worried for awhile that something would be loose and fall off but when it didn't I just kept riding.
A few months ago I changed the headlight and passing lamps to high intensity halogens. Last week I got one of those 'rountuits' and readjusted the passing lamps.
