Cymbal as an air cleaner cover

3 Attachment(s)
There was an earlier thread where someone asked about using brass parts on their ride. I mentioned that I was working on using a brass 6" splash cymbal as an air cleaner cover and would post a few pics when finished. The engraver, a guy that does trophies and such, couldn't get the black letters I wanted but engraved the letters anyway. If anyone knows what process I could use to get the engraved letters black, I'd like to hear it. I tried different types of paint, wiping off the wet paint, rubbing dry paint off with 0000 steel wool, nothing worked. The engraved letters just aren't deep enough. On top it says "95 cubic inch" and on the bottom "FXST", arcked to match the radius of the cymbal. I used a brass wing nut and a felt-like washer that is used on the cymbal stand under the wing nut. But, after sitting on the bike, the wing nut sticks out a lil far and I may replace it and the brass stud with a brass phillips oval head 5/6-18 machine screw.

there's a whole bunch of suggestions here http://www.finishing.com/1000-1199/1198.shtml
for chemically darkening brass . you'd still have to remove the black from the non-engraved part of the cymbal though , and if the engraving just isn't deep enough you'll run into the same problem you have with paint

the cymbal looks great as a cover , very cool idea . congratz !
