Default Cams for an 09 Night Train

I recently picked up an 09 Night Train with 7600 miles. It already had a SE heavy breather and Rinehart Racing Crossover pipes with a canned tune loaded on it. It runs good but a bit rich and I want to wake it up somemore. Alot of my daily riding is about a mile to and from work at 15 to 30 Mph, on the weekends I get out and do a bit of everything from highway cruzing for a few hours to twisty hilly back roads leaning over till I hear some thing scrap. I have a tendency to stretch out the gears comin off a stop and I'd like better roll on power in 6th gear as right now it seems like I can never stay in it unless I'm pushing 80. I'm thinking Cams and a good custom dyno tune so I called my local indie and he is recommending S&S 570 Cams. His total price, install and dyno tuning was $1500. Will these cams work in a 96 for what im lookin for and is it a good price?

Depends on which end of the spectrum you want more out of, really... If you want more down low, low to mid, mid, mid to high, or higher rpm; there are plenty of choices to choose from. What your preference is depends on where to start.

Now with my bike, same year and model, I'm putting a 103 no mile stock take off setup on, and going with andrews57 cams because I like to ride between 3k and 6500 if I'm really in a mood, so I went with a "hot rod" cam

Honestly I want to get this bike performing like my previous 07 FXST, it seemed to have power through the entire rpm range. Coming off a light it pulled hard all the way through the rev limiter in every gear, not petering off until closing in on 100 and it had the low end grunt to make 6th very useful. I didn't even realize how good I had it with that bike until I got this one and noticed the difference. Unfortunately I don't know what kind of work was done to that motor.

Why not just change the gearing. If you don't do long runs on the interstate a 3.15:1 final drive ratio (30/70 pulley combo) works well. If you ride more on the interstate a 2.97:1 or 3.06:1 ratio is nice. See the sticky in this forum.

I'm not wanting to mess with gearing.
After doing some reading the Woods TW-6-6, Andrew's 37H or Andrew's 57H sound like they may be a better fit for me. Thoughts?

Andrews 48H will give you some good power in the low to mid range RPM. Can't help you with higher RPM's

Good choice with woods, but a big fan of Andrews cams....Strong pulls from low rpm's and never slows down. Damn proven cams with a good tune....Good luck and enjoy

If you are not going to bump the compression (570's want 10:1) via smaller head gasket or decking the heads, I would recommend Andrews 48's. We install a lot of them here at the shop. With the 48's you get the low/mid torque but they don't fall off like the SE255's...

What I like about the 37H and 57H is they claim torque from 2200 to 5500 which should make 6th a lot more useful and reduce downshifting above 60. The TW-6-6 claims torque through the entire RPM band, anyone with experience please chime in. Does $1500 sound reasonable for a Cam install and dyno tune?

I agree, if your looking for an increase in performance, changing to a 30/70 trans sprocket/rear pulley combo is a better bang for the buck mod then a cam swap. I put Andrews 37h cams in my Breakout, and while they did give me a nice bump in performance, it was nothing compared to the change I felt when I did the 30/70 swap on my Rocker (with stock cams), it has a lot more pull off the line and thru all gears, with 6th gear now actually usable!!! (and cams wont help much with that). It also costs a lot less then a cam swap/dyno and you might decide you don't need new cams, but if you do, the combo will only be better!!!

The 37/57 are better suited for more compression then your 96ci 9:2/1. and they don't really come on at 2200rpm, again, I have the 37H in my Breakout and it's actually closer to 3000. They have an intake close at 38* and the TW-6-6 is at 40*. Where do you want your torque? If you want a cam that comes on down low, say 1500-2200, look for an intake close at 30* or below. A intake close closer to 40 and above will come on later but carry out to higher RPM....I'm about to swap my Rockers cams and did a lot of research, and for what I was looking for, narrowed it down to the Andrews 48h and the S&S 583c, from what I've learned, both are very good choices for 96ci with stock compression. I went with the 583c because I wanted more low end torque, and with an intake close at 18* it comes on early, but the dyno sheets I've seen also show it's still pretty strong at 5000k, the 48s curve on the dyno sheets I could find, was moved a little to the right (higher rpm)........and, what are you getting for $1500, I would think even with cams, inner bearing, adjustable pushrods, lifters and dyno, that's a little high...at least compared to what my indy charges.
