The front shifter shaft is probably the problem. My brother's siezed up and the shop told him the same thing. I oil mine several times a year after that and don''t have any trouble with it. Simple fix for sure.
+1! on this. You can use the Syn3 50W in the transmission. Your lubrication of the shift lever is a known issue with softails.
An oil that is too thick in the tranny will make shifting difficult in colder temps. As simple as that. 75W-90 is what I run too. Mobil 1.

This is a known and easily fixable problem with even the most basic common sense maintenance.
One other thing to make shifting a bit easier is to get rid of the stock linkage bar.
The ends suck because they collect crap that binds them up and makes shifting feel stiffer.
The easiest way out is to get the cheap HD Stainless Steel replacement.
It looks good (polished SS) and has real Hyme Joints on the ends that are easy to maintain and far less susceptible to dirt and moisture.
