Ok , looking for easy way to pull starter..
Looks like the oil bag has to come out ?
any tricks to do this ?
I am old and lazy , and wish to ask questions before I do it the hard way .
If you have never removed a starter before, I suggest you go to the dealer and have them printout the instructions for you.
I don't know if it changed between the '01 and the '03 model years but in '01 you had to pull the primary cover off to get the bolt out of the end of the starter shaft.
At least talk to someone that knows the complete procedure to replace a starter.
thanks for the replies, I have the primary off, searched the threads
and havent found much in the way of any easy way to pull starter.(oiltank too close).and it is chrome , so dont want to scratch it
this is first softail I worked on .
also the first HD that banged like a hammer/anvil when starting hot.
compensator tight, teeth/rivets good on ring gear, starter support bushing in outer primary good , will replace the drive.
"EVO's" are pretty easy ...this looks like a poor design for maintenance..
just wanted to see if there was a trick or two..
seems like the cost of a starter/drive is 35-140 bucks .
next scream you hear will be from East Texas
When we did my'01, we had to pull the battery, oil tank and primary cover in order to access everything. Be sure to put in all new seals around the starter shaft. After all this work you durn sure don't want to have to do it again to replace an "O" ring later.
My HD dealer made me a print out of the procedure free of charge. If the engine has been beefed up, you might want to consider putting in a high torque starter. I know its expensive but after we had the 95 ci. kit put in it with the cams, we needed a stronger starter. The original starter only lasted one year after we punched out the cubic inches from 88 to 95.
Since I will be removing starter bolts Tuesday when I install my open primary, I need a few tips here. To wiggle the oil tank without moving do I only need to remove the top bolts holding it in? Obviosuly the batteruy adbn battery box ahve to be taken out...
