Default Speedo Issues with 2001 Fatboy

I am having issue with the speedometer on my 2001 FLSTFI. The needle drops to zero at various times and speeds and the odometer flashes and sometimes goes completely blank. I have already replaced the speed sensor, but still have the problem. Any advice? The turn signals also flash sometimes when I turn the ignition to start the bike. Could the TSM be causing the speedometer odometer problems?

Thanks,
BOSN4 ret

You probably need a new voltage regulator. Check voltage at battery, if it over 14 volt your overcharging and and the speedo over current shuts off the speedo.

I know this is an old thread... but it seems that I am having the same problem. All of a sudden the needle jumps to 0 and then back to the actual speed. I also noticed that the engine light comes on randomly and sometimes it appears that when the needle drops... it's almost like for that split second the fuel gets cut off. Another thing that happened today was the electronic screen where miles are flashed off and came back on.

I also have a 2001 flstfi

Check the grounds, particularly the main battery ground for corrosion, good contact, tightness, etc.

Mine ended up being the voltage regulator. It was an easy fix. I bought an after market regulator for $50 and replaced it myself. Good luck.

I'm taking it to the dealer on Tuesday.. their computer was 'occupied' today so they couldn't diagnose it... $57.00 is what they will charge just for that. Ugh.. I wish I had the right tools to do this crap by myself

That is the worst part about owning computerized vehicles. Gotta spend $60-$100 just to find out you gotta spend $100's more!
