Hello all. I have gone through all the posts for modifying the passing lamps to stay on when the high beams are on. All of these posts suggest pig tail kits which only work on 2005 and newer models. Other posts for wiring discuss jumping or splicing are not for my older bike and I don't think I want to splice into another circuit with amperage the lamps draw.
Has any one just disconnected the passing switch power lead from the passing lamp switch and re-routed it to the ignition accessory terminal? Or some other terminal that has power when the ignition is on? I reviewed the wiring diagram for this bike and it is confusing. The route of the power from the headlamp to the passing lamp switch to the high beam switch to the lamps goes around in circles!
Any help would be appreciated.

 

I tied mine into the wire for the front fendertip lamp. Passing lamps and fendertip lamp are leds, so amperage draw is low.

 

On your bike the passing lamps are LEDs.

LEDs weren`t around in `93...

I`m going to tell you the way to do it that doesn`t involve using any of those pos wire tapper devices, but it will involve some work, but when you are done you will have a clean install which can be reversed.

Pull the tanks and the dash.

Unplug the connector for the Right Side control switches (yeah, it`s crazy, but like you said, the wiring for this seems to go around in circles).

Look at the connector half that is on the switch harness side, you will see two yellow wires, one goes to the headlamp, the other goes to the passing lamp toggle switch.

Trace the wires and find the wire that goes to the toggle switch.

Remove the terminal for that wire from the connector, it may be a pain, but don`t cut the wire...

Once the terminal is removed, go ahead and plug the connector back together, you`re done with it.

Follow the yellow wire to the toggle switch on the left side fork cover, remove the wire from the switch (coil up the wire, tag it and put it away (or tie wrap it in place), in case you need to return it to original configuration).

Make up a new wire (16 AWG is big enough) with the proper size ring connectors, and connect one end to the toggle switch, the other end you will route up to the "lites" circuit breaker under the dash, connect it to the silver colored stud.

Make sure you run the wire in a protective cover.

One of these yellow wires powers the passing lamp toggle switch...

Thanks Dan ! I knew some one would know a better way. Its easy to pull the tanks and dash. Been off twice already. Had to route my stereo wiring and had to replace speedometer housing bracket that cracked. I appreciate your help! Its gotten to cold to ride. So its time to get it on the bench, change all the fluids, replace the front tire and soften the rear shock adjustment. Too stiff! Merry Christmas! BTW my passing lamps are amber fog incandescent. Draw too much for tying into the fender lamp. No fires here.......

 

So are the passing lamps on my `89 FLSTC, I think they are made by Wagner, cheap and seem to last.
