Default Oil Light and Oil Tank Issues.

Hello, I have a 06 Heritage Softail that is having some issues. I changed the oil (HOT) and made sure the correct amount was put back in. At idle the oil light will come on but go off when you increase the rpm's a little. Also, the oil tank will fill up an inch past the FULL mark on the dipstick. It appears the oil pump can't pull the oil out of the tank fast enough.

I have checked all oil lines for blockage and cam chain tensioners are in good condition. I appreciate any suggestions/help.

Did this start immediately after your oil change...?? Or was it happening prior to the oil change?

After adjusting the oil, did you take it for a good ride to see if/when the oil light would come on....?

How did you check the oil lines for blockage?

Did you open up the cam chest to check the tensioners? Did you inspect the oil pump while in the cam chest...?

Yes opened up cam chest and checked tensioners, I haven’t removed the cam plate yet to inspect the oil pump.

Before tearing into it, remover the sender switch and screw in a manual pressure gage. Make sure you have an OEM oil filter. 20W-50 oil. Should be about 12 or so lbs at idle. At 2000 or above, close to 35 since that's were the relief let's off.

That 12 is designed that by size of pump and that way so oil injections for cooling do not operate untill 18 or so relief built into them. You don't want to cook oil at idle.

Motor can take more heat then oil at brief idling.

Did you use the same type oil filter as you have been? Just a thought. Good luck with it.

Well I think I found the issue. Part of the oil pump was blocked with these pieces. No sign of where they came from. Tensioners are in good condition.

My old eyes can't tell..... Are those pieces rubber, plastic or metal...??

If metal or they look like they could be from the bearing cage, check your inner cam bearings....
