Default Clutch/lever question

So here is my issue, I recently replaced the compensator with the SE one. Now when I go into first it slams in a harder than I remember before and for sure harder than my Dyna did. If I start the bike with it in gear it will slightly want to go forward. Also if I start the bike with it in neutral on a stand the rear wheel will spin at a steady speed while in neutral. I checked at the lever and I do not have the 1/16 to 1/8 gap between the cable ferrule and lever bracket. Shifting isn't bad and there doesn't seem to be any slippage. Occasionally there is a little resistance when shifting out of first, but not huge. No problems finding neutral. So my question is do I need to adjust and if so should I do full adjustment or just adjust the cable to get the required gap and see if that resolves problem. Adjusting a clutch on a bike is new to me. 2008 Heritage w/ about 9k miles. Thanks in advance

I would certainly start with adjusting the cable free play. It sounds like the clutch isn't disengaging all the way when you pull it in. Is there a lot of play? With a cold motor it is normal for the bike to move forward when starting in gear with the clutch in.

Adjusting the lever to the correct amount of play by using Ur cable nuts will actually cause less clutch movement than U have now because Urs is not adjusted correctly.
So that being the case IMO U should adjust the clutch pac itself.

Here's how.

Then readjust Ur cable nuts for correct lever play.

As far as the clunk, its normal that its a little louder in colder weather when the oils cold.

Also when starting Ur bike in gear it will want to pull forward, also when in neutral and on Ur lift the rear tire will spin. At Least all the bikes I worked on and mine does it and it's been said the same in here many times.

Wondering,, did U just change oils at the same time.??

My bike clunked more and shifted harder with I tired some 80-145 GL in the tranny.
I removed it a couple weeks after installing.
Went to Mobil 1 syn 75-90 GL and it made a big diff for the better.

You should never adjust the cable without first adjusting (or at least verifying) the clutch pack is properly adjusted. Adjusting the cable only can give you a false sense of security. You need to have freeplay at both the clutch pack and at the lever. If you only adjust the cable you can get freeplay at the lever but that is no guarantee that you have freeplay at the clutch pack.

If he has significant freeplay the clutch may not completely disengage when pulled in. Adjusting the cable to spec. isn't going to hurt anything. Maybe it'll work, maybe it won't. I agree tho that he might as well start from scratch if there isn't a lot of freeplay.
