Default Starting noises - does not sound good

Well Christmas was good! A new transmitter for the garage door opener and new super trapp slipons!! The down side, I wanted to check the wiring to the transmitter and headlight first - which meant pull the tank. Not a problem, just a PITA!! Turns out the transmitter was bad.... The exhaust install was fine except super trapp did not include the screws to put the end caps on AND one of the threads was not done correctly ( but worked once I ran a 1/4-20 tap through it) You should not have to do that when spending $500!!!![:@]

OK now the problem. When I start some times I hear a whir or even less often a grind. Other times no problem and I start right up. I had put in a new battery prior to this but had not run the bike for about 10 days and despite an overnight trickle still seems low ( I will charge it again). Am I losing my starter??? Bike does have 45K on it - thanks in advance TIA

It s a gear with a one way clutch that the starter spins against your clutch hub gear and spins the motor. When the bendix housing is cracked the unit slips, this could be your wirl noise, if the bendix gear isn't travling out far enough, this could be your grind. But it all starts with a hot battery, so make sure the battery is good first

So is this the same as the starter clutch?? To the shop it goes - I have a buddy who has an independent shop so probably cheaper to have him do it than me do it for the first time. The manual says I have to pull the oil tank to get to the starter. It also looks like I may need a specialty tool if I have to replace the pinion gear sooo......... probably replace the brushes while It's out too. Thanks for the help!

In general, it pisses me off that with Softails, the starter/solenoid is impossible to get to without removing the oil tank.
