It was all in my head. Well, just outside actually.
About a week ago, I started noticing a little rattle once I got over 40 mph or so. Sounded like a little pea gravel hitting under the front fender.
Drove me flippin' nutz. I would vary the RPMs, pull in the clutch, ride at a constant speed-anything to see if I could narrow down when the sound would occur. It was always there.
Checked all the wires/cables up front to make sure they weren't slapping aournd. Made sure there was nothing in the windshield bag or elsewhere that was clicking me into crazyville.
Took off the windshield, still there. Like that noise when you're driving to a family vacation and something is squeeking in the car every time you go over 40, but you can't figure out what it is, so you yell at the kids. But when you're on 2 wheels, it gets you a little more concerned.
Checked the front wheel axle nut covers-they were tight. I kept squatting my head down near the speedo to see if it was something there. Nope. Every time I thought I had the area narrowed down, I realized I didn't.
So, today got home and one of the kids put on my half helmet and was running around the house. I noticed the small plastic visor on the front was loose. Not thinking anything of it, I tightened it. Then thought, really, could that be the noise. Jumped on the bike for a short scamper, and I'll be damned, no more noise.
Not sure what I learned here. But I feel relieved.

See there!!! It is worth having kids after all!!! I know what you mean about the differance between noise in a car and noise on a bike. It tends to cause a great deal of concern. If something goes on the car you have 3 more wheels, if it goes on the bike you are screwed! Give that kids some candy!!
