Default How to cure hot oil temps?

Yesterday I put 350+- miles on the fat boy lo, keeping an eye on oil temps quite a bit during the ride. I usually hung between 230-250. Freeway at 85 mph, slow cruise at 65, some in town light to light cruising. My buddies '08 xbones was never over 220*. I think my bike is running hotter than I'd like. I know these are air cooled engines and efi will shut em down if they get too hot, or will "miss" at idle to cool the engine. I however want to explore my options with cooling the oil, what brand of oil coolers do you guys recommend? I have been looking at Jagg and they look pretty nice.

I have a jagg 10 row without the thermostat. Works fantastic. My 96 ran hot as hades and once I decided to go 106 I just didn't want to take any risks. Before my dipstick got stolen the bike would see 270 in the pan, since the oil cooler it went to 240 in the pan. That's after it went through the engine.

Are you sure the power vision is dialed in right?

A properly tuned engine will run cooler.

I do not know what you are running now but synthetic oil runs cooler then regular oil. I went with the newer version of the Harley oil cooler, its a bit larger, the one with the thermostate in it. I am very pleased with it. I always try to stay with Harley brand when possible. It was in the 80's yesterday here and I had my bike out for about an hour yasterday and I ran it up to about 90 mph on the highway for a bit then back down to around 65 and I was running around 210 on my oil temps with 30lbs of pressure. Good luck!

I recently did a change to HD Syn3 20-50 oil. I live in Colorado, and ride in Wyoming a lot, so I cam constantly at elevations from 5500-8000'. As far as the power vision, I have been using the map given to me by Fuel Moto for the TW777 cam. I tried data logging and auto tuning off of the power vision software, and my bike had misses and sputters at idle, so I went back to the FM tune. I am totally confident that a oil cooler will solve my problem, only thing is, I hate chrome, and I HAVE to get something in black......

The highest mine goes is 230 and thats in the summer and 80's -90's mostly this time of year I run about 200. It could be running a little lean. No I don't run a cooler.

For me a stage 1 with an inverted v style oil cooler was running consistent 225 on mild to hot days. Was well over 250 Last year at gettysburg bike week and I overheated a couple times.

Installed screaming eagle cams a week later. Oil temp has never been above 225 since. Most days it runs a fairly consistent 190 to 210. Hot days may get a little higher than 215....but nothing like the nut roaster last year.

mine dropped from 245 average to 215 average by doing the usual STG-1, Cams, SERT tuner and a good dyno..

Use syn oil and even the 250* temps won't be too much for the oil.

Also if Ur bike is new is will run cooler the more miles U put on her.

AFAIC black is the only way to go in oil coolers, chrome has some insulating qualities although not enough to worry about. A super simple fix is a old power steering cooler rigged up. Leave bare for best heat transfer or paint which will insulate.

Buddy of mine had the same question. He dumped $$$ after $$$ into his bike including a jag oil cooler. He finally gave up and bought a new Goldwing. As for me I run synthetic oil and don't worry about the heat.

And btw the synthetic oil made no difference in the oil temp. It just tolerates the heat better than dyno oil.
