How often do you advise to change primary and tranny oil

Was just wondering how often everyone changes there primary and tranny fluid. Changed the primary and tranny oil at the 1000 mile service and the 5000 mile check up and just wondering if people also change it with the oil change that I do myself between service check ups. Thanks for the advice.

I change my crankcase, primary and transmission oil every 2500 miles. Some folks will say that's too often but I don't care.

I change oil and filter every 2,500 miles, and primary and trans. every 5,000. I think the oil takes more of a beating because of heat, condensation, carbon, etc. so I do it more often.

HD says 5,000 for everything.

Regards,

Bill

I did mine at 100 ,1000 and 2500 miles all three and do all at 2500 mile intervals with filter all the time. Cheap insurance IMHO

Read the manual, but listen to the folks on here. More often is probably better.

Changing Primary Fluid

I put roughly a 200 miles a year on my 2000 Fatboy. Can I wait until I have put 5,000 miles on since my last primary fluid change or do I have to change the primary fluid every year?

haak30 06-17-2019 10:59 PM

I have 86K miles on my 09 Nigh Train and change all 3 holes every 5K miles and have zero issues with the he engine.

Don't know what year you are referring to but 07' manual says oil @5000, Primary @10,000 and trans @ 20,000.

If you don't do enough miles in a year, i would do all 3 annually

Weeboy1 06-19-2019 09:56 PM

It’s one quart in each extra hole. Do them all!

Chunker 06-19-2019 10:02 PM

If you bar hop you probably don't put enough miles on to worry about published intervals, just change annually. If you actually ride and put miles on, follow the service manuals recommendations.

Nice thing though is that everyone is free to change as often as they like and use whatever fluids they choose.

I bought my bike with an unknown service history, sh!t itself a couple of months later. Top end rebuild and change all 3 holes religiously every 5000 KMs (about 3000 miles I think) and she runs like a dream nearly 10 years later! Better to do it too often than not often enough!!

I do the same but every 3,000 miles...It's cheap and only takes a few minutes longer to do all 3 holes....

MilsurpShooter 06-20-2019 06:50 AM

Everything every 3k miles. If I don't manage the 3k miles (Might not this year due to being laid up with a bad foot sprain) then I'll change it out at the end of winter into spring before I start riding it again.

Spindrifter 06-20-2019 09:27 AM

yep, every 2500 for engine, tranny and primary every 5000. I'd do it annually if you don't ride that many miles in a year.

RANGER73 06-20-2019 10:33 AM

Because I'm self employed and drive a service van straight from my home I don't get to ride to work.
Same reason that I don't get to ride that often.
But I change the oil every year, the primary and trans every 2.
Mileage doesn't come into play for me.
I'm more concerned with condensation.

ChromeJunkie 06-23-2019 01:42 PM

I change the engine oil at 5000, per what the manual says and both transmission and primary oil every other oil change. When I installed the big bore kit at 87K, the cross hatches in the jugs were still visible. If you want to change the oil more often, by all means do it, because it definitely won’t hurt anything.
