Default Changing fork oil FXST

Guys, I've seen write ups about how to do this and how easy it is. It seems easy enough... I've got the bike on the jack. Forks extended, unscrewed drain screws, drained fork oil. Unscrew top bolt at top of forks.... I can't pour fork oil in there... I've taken the forks out of the triple treese many times, but never done this. I could see how if I dropped the forks down out of the trees and unscrewed that bolt thats under pressure then poured the new oil in and closed it all back up. But that's not how the manual says to do it, and thats not how anyone on here has described it. Little help here....

if it is a standard wideglide fork setup like my nightrain, you should be able to fill thru the large bolt hole on the top of the triple trees. If that doesn't work, loosen the pinch bolts in the bottom tree and slide them down far enough to remove the bolt fitting. It'll be skinny with a 2 flat area that you can wrench off. The springs will more than likely have a fairly heavy preload on them because of the lowering, so keep a handle on it and don't point it straight at your face.

Thats exactly what I wanted to know. So it is acceptable to drop the forks and remove the bolt under pressure and fill it through there... Thanks.

With FX/XL front ends, I just take the whole tube off the bike. Unscrew the fork cap (off the bike there isn't that much spring pressure at all) and pour the old oil out from the top, and then refill with the wet amount from the manual.

I've found those little drain screws at the bottom are a pain in the ***.

I guess I don't understand why you can't pour fork oil in the hole you took the cap out of. I have changed mine on my 99 FXSTC without a problem. I did use a funnel to make it easier without spilling any.

You can use a funnel. You have to make sure the funnel is small enough to fit down thru the hole to allow the oil to flow freely past the threads. If not then the oil will not flow into the tube very well if at all.

When I changed the fork oil on mine I added it through the top as well. Was surprised how easy it was to do because I was expecting alot of pressure when I took the top bolt out.
