Has anyone had their stock seat enhanced (i.e. gel inserts, extra padding, etc.)? Or does anyone know a good place to send it to have it done?
I am looking to get mine made a little more comfy since it is the only seat I have that has a passenger pillion. I will use it for long trips and when riding 2 up.
I just had my sundowners seat done using a gel product from Gel Tec. It is better than a plain ol' gel pad. I had an automotive upholstery business install it. The generic pad of the stuff costs about $95 and I paid $50 to have it "inserted" into the stock padding.
By that I mean that the edges of the Harley seat padding were kept and new 1/2" padding was installed over the waffle gel to keep the leather looking smooth.
I was using a pad that you carry with you called "soft bottom" made by the same company and got tired of keeping track of it so I bought a slab of the stuff and had it installed... no muss, no fuss.
I rode 13 hours straight with the stock seat and the soft bottom pad added on last year to bike week. This year I hope to go the same 13 hours without anything but the modified seat. I highly recommend this approach.
I had mine done from www.americanasoftseats.com Great work and REALLY comfortable for long rides. Reasonable pricing and will have it back to you in just a few days.
If your a little adventerous do it yourself.I wanted to get my seat recovered and it would be cheaper to buy a new seat.I googled"instructions on recovering a motorcycle seat" and a boatload of sites came up.One showed step by step how to put a gel insert into a stock seat.Had a list of tools, everthing to do the job.I'm going to do mine myself.Worst case I have to break down and have it done.
