Default Oil dipstick popped out while riding

My 2011 Heritage just had its 10,000 mile maintenance and since then put maybe 500 miles on it. Today the dipstick came out and covered us and the bike in oil while riding. The oil was at the full mark and I always check it when its hot. Just on a usual ride and maybe kicking it a little hard. Any similar experiences....

Are you sure it was not over-filled? Even being at the top mark on the stick can be problematic. Lots of folks say to keep the oil at the halfway point when hot. This is one of the few things at really annoys me; that and the football air cleaner hitting my knee.

I have heard of that as a problem, but only when the oil was beyond full.

I keep my oil at the halfway mark on the stick when hot. Don't forget, that's checked to the side-stand, not on the lift. I've done all my own service, work, and mods. 22k and never an issue. I think it was a little too much oil.

Two things that make the dip stick come out, too much pressure in the tank and the seal wore out on the dip stick.
Engine blow by can cause too much pressure, blocked breather, bad umbrella valves, clogged breather line also too much oil and the tank does not have enough air in the top, and does not breath right.
For the bad seal on the dip stick I have added a o-ring.

With 10K on the clock I'd say a bit too much oil. Doesn't take much. In fact I run mine 1/2 Quart Low (as others have said they do as well) just because.

Had that happen, made a freakin big mess. It was my first ride after servicing. Even with all the oil that blew out, it was seriously overfilled. That taught me to always check, esp. when serviced at an stealership.

As one of the other fine folks said, it seems that our bikes like the oil level around mid point between full and low on you dipstick. To the top of the full mark when hot is TOO MUCH...doesn't seem like it should be, but it is...many of us have confirmed this HD "feature"...LOL. But the fix is easy, 1/2 way between full and low and you should be good to go. Good luck.

Angry Oil dipstick pops out while riding

Good some good advice... thanks. For what this bike costs, couldn't I get a threaded dipstick! Like the o-ring idea, don't need more oil on me.

It's telling there's to much oil in the bike , I don't think you want that extra pressure . I run mine a 1/2 quart low. When I change my oil it never needs the full amout that the book says.
