Downshift issue (kind of)

Hi all: I may have an issue with downshifting of '08 fatboy. If I am in one of the higher gears, and I pull in the clutch and continue to move down thru the gears (without engaging the clutch) every now an then the tranny will not let me move down to another gear. If I bump the clutch just a little I can continue.

let me try another example:
I am on 6th, pull in clutch, press down of forward shifter - click now if 5th
5th - press down - click - 4th
4th - press down - click - 3rd
3rd - press down - nothing, press again, nothing, bump clutch then try again - click

Is this a sign of needing a clutch adjustment? Chris.

Does it do this when the bike is moving or sitting still? I've had to bump the clutch on every Harley if trying to down shift while stopped.

Have U EVER oiled Ur shift shafts..

sometimes they need it, I oil mine at least 1@ yr, usually in the spring..

other than that U may need to adjust Ur shifting linkage.

This occurs while coasting towards a red light or stop sign.

I have never oiled the shaft. Good idea. As for the shift linkage, that could be the issue. I had replaced the long ling with a chrome piece. I triple checked the length of the new to the old before installation. But lets say it is off; which way should I adjust it?

If you just replaced part of the shift linkage it is probably safe to say that will be the cause of your problem. Did it happen before the swap??

As far as how to adjust it, sorry, no info here. Good luck with the fix.

I had a tranny problem this winter. Wouldnt down shift to first gear. Turned out to be a snapped spring in the shifter prawl.
