I went to my local dealer and was quoted a price of nearly 1500.00 to do the fix with the new cam plate and bearings setup with new hydloc tenioner set up complete with new oil pump. That is a lot of coin for a man on a fixed income. I know some swear by going the gear route setup from S&S but then there is the crank shift thing.
I can only afford to do this once and want to do it right the first time. To me my deluxe is a piece of art and deserves the very best and I want to take care of it and pass it down to one of my sons.. I have cancer, money is tight....and I want to get this done. My dealer is like just trade the bike but low ***** me on my trade in which is like brand new with new tires and new battery and battey tender.
I live in central florida....can anyone here point me in the right direction and or an indy shop to do the work. A good bud told me to find a good shop and just have the motor rebuilt and adress all of the weak points of the twin cam motor...this kind of bites since the bike only has 6100 miles on it......Please feel free to point me in the right direction.....
many thanks in advance
kindly

I just did the upgrade to my 2005 Deluxe. Use the 96" cam plate and oil pump w/ conversion cams or you have only fixed half the problem. (The S/E came plate/oil pump/tensioner set up only upgrades one of the 2 chains.)

I did the work myself. Cost for parts was about $900 using on-line discount dealers. Included S/E adj. pushrods and new Gaterman lifters, plus the bearing tool, 96" Cam Plate, Chains, gears, conversion cams, hydrolic tensioners, oil pump and associated hardware and gaskets. I got about 20% off on all HD parts and the Andrews cams. It's not too difficult and there are lots of you tube video's and assistance on-line.

As mentioned, your friends problem was unusual at that mileage, and you probably don't need to do it right away. Inspect the tensioners, and make a decision.

Did the dealer mention you'd need to also replace the cams in order to get a roller chain on the inner side? Otherwise the hydraulic kit reuses the inner link chain, which will continue to eat away the inner tensioner shoe.

Bottom line, check them. The percentage of bad chains is relatively low. For every guy that has had major issues, there are thousands more with many thousand miles on their bike who don't even know what a cam chain tensioner is.
^^^Best advice so far.

and 1500$ including parts and labour is sadly around what I paid, it is your chance to get new cams though.

Looked at his post again, not sure wether the milage is missing a comma or a zero, if its a zero it's definitely in need of new tensioners.

I just called Sauk Prairie HD in Sauk City, WI. I like their approach. They will inspect the tensioners for $110. If fine, you're done. If they are worn, they apply the $110 to the repair. I plan to have them checked in the spring as I have 25k on my '03 FLHTCUI now.
They only recommend changing the inner can bearing if you upgrade the cam, which I don't plan on doing. I am happy with my current stage one performance.
When the time comes I will do the SE Hydraulic upgrade. Not going to worry until then.
I think it would be crazy to rebuild your engine now, to avoid the risk, of having to rebuild it in the future. Just ride it and enjoy it. If you can't stop worrying just get the inspection.
