I was starting my rental search basically between Benbrook to the west and Forest Hill to the east, possibly staying near the 20, not sure if i should go further south or not.
Not sure about those areas, I live way up north of Fort Worth in a small town called Justin.

Good luck with your search

Forest Hill is not the best neighborhood. Benbrook is OK, don't speed there, the cops make a good living writing tickets. PM if you'd like more info.

If you're flying in for just one day come into Dallas Love Field. Its very easy to get into and out of. Rental cars available at the airport. Dallas is not as humid as Houston in July. Big Al's BBQ right by the airport has very good brisket. Also, Celebration restaurant by the airport has very good everything! Do a little online Dallas visitors research, Google is your friend, plenty of air conditioned things to do and see Downtown and Deep Ellum areas. Also, Strokers is near the airport, stop and have a burger or a beer before you head back to the airport, especially if you come on the weekend.
A Taxi or Uber may be all you need for one day.

July in Houston is stage 2 sauna. Stage 1 sauna (aka seriously brutal) would be Houston in August. There are (maybe) a handful of interesting things about Houston, but generally it is a flat humid wasteland of worthless humanity.

The best thing about Houston is seeing it in your rear view mirror on your way to Galveston, San Antonio or Austin.

A.) Fly to Love field, close your eyes till your west of 35, and enjoy Ft Worth on your trip to "Dallas".

2.) come to the hill country instead.

third.) Houston:
Go to google Maps zoom till you see most of the city, about 2 mile scale zoom, find the large "green colored areas" a 10 mile radius around the green is the decent spots typically ("new" katy, Memorial, Rice Village, allen pkwy, hermann park, sugar land)
Id say land at hobby if you have the option over bush, just dont stay in the hobby area.
