Default AZ Riders Group 2013 summer ride

This thread is to plan our summer 2013 ride. We usually hang out in the social group called Arizona Riders Group. We wanted to keep the planning of this trip in a single thread so here we are.

The Arizona Riders Group has made a summer trip for the past several summers, usually in June. We have done the Rockies a couple of times as well as a California ride. Rides are usually about a week long.

This information is preliminary, we are just starting to plan this trip. We are considering doing both Yellowstone and Sturgis this summer. We will not be in Sturgis during the ralley, looking at late June. Given the mileage we are talking about, we are thinking we need to extend the ride to 10 riding days. 2 of these days will be spent riding the areas around Yellowstone and Sturgis.

Here is a link to the ride plan; http://rideplanner.harley-davidson.c...r/share/523117

Here is the itinerary (so far only 9 days, leaves one day open):
Day 1 Phoenix to Marble Canyon, AZ 252 miles
Day 2 Marble Canyon, AZ to Provo, UT 449 miles
Day 3 Provo, UT to Yellowstone 385 miles (a lot of interstate, could be more freeway)
Day 4 Yellowstone
Day 5 Yellowstone to Sturgis, SD 472 miles (a lot of interstate)
Day 6 Sturgis
Day 7 Sturgis to Loveland, Co 383 miles (thru custer state park)
Day 8 Loveland, Co to Delta, Co 298 miles (thru Estes Park)
Day 9 Delta, Co to Cortez, Co 174 miles (Million Dollar highway)
Day 10 Cortez, Co to Phoenix 497 miles

total miles is 2909 with 7 days of riding = 416/day average

I am looking forward to lots of discussion, suggestions and tweaks.

Hey Dave, did you check out CO Hwy 14? It's just north of Estes Park, looks like a long canyon run...
How about hwy 40 between Granby, CO and interstate 70?

seems like 14 was on the Co. ride, I've deleted that rideplan, we may have rerouted to avoid fire closure, I can't remember.
We may want to take the three days getting to Yellowstone, looks like some nice riding through parts of Utah, be a shame to just blow through on the Interstate. lets see how the ride progresses.

Dave,

Here is last years ride. I think I updated this to show what we actually did with the detours and all. Neither of the roads I mentioned above are on it. In fact I think 14 was in the plan, but we had to go around that fire. No Pike's Peak either...

Can we consider making this a two week ride, or are people going to have trouble getting that much time off?

It would be nice to go at a little slower pace and take in more of the sights in Yellowstone and the Black Hills.

Joe you still sick or is Donna posting under your sign in?
I was thinking 11 days,so far with 9 there are a couple long days, I could do 2 weeks, but I think that will be too much for some.

I didn't say we had to ride slower.

In the Black Hills area alone there is Devil's Tower, Mount Rushmore, the Badlands, the crazy Horse Memorial, Spearfish Canyon, and other areas that just can't be done in one day.
