I was really struggling first time I removed the battery, following owner's manual about removing negative first and that failure do to so could RESULT IN DEATH (you realized that after reading 10 pages of the manual, HD already warned you about DEATH for at least 45 times). Then I stumbled onto Delboy's video and it was just a piece of cake after that!
Just watched the video. I find that way hard unless the newer Sportsters have a longer negative cable.
I disconnect the positive then take off the negative cable from the top of the engine (block? - see pic for area) then the battery can be pulled out with the cable attached.

Yes, every time I read my service manual that makes me laugh. They are warning you about death every chance they get. It's quite funny because most of it is common sense.
