OKay newbie at this: Joke first. "what kind of bee dont ride?...... A NEWBIE.

Okay I have a 1989 Sportster 883 project. Got it wired in and tried to start it, it just cranks and has good compression 130 in each cyclinder. I have no spark at plugs. I have tested the coil and even got a back up (dual Fire) both coils test good and in spec. I have power to the coil with switch in the on position. I installed new (aftermarket switches) and have not checked the kill switch.

Timing could be the issue but my marks are good and TDC for front position cylinder. I am making a newbie guess it is my ignition module or ignition sending unit. Any and all comments and help would be great.

 

check for power at the ignition module (the 12+ wire) if it is there that eliminates all the rest of the possible stuff...if the 12v is there it could be the module, that can be checked by going to the low voltage side of the coil and cranking it over,, you should have 12v intermittent (on,off, on, off) but depending on your meter it may appear as on all the time...if it is not at he coil, pull the ignition module (without unwiring it) and look at the timing bell behind it, they break or come loose sometimes, look at it carefully as they only fit in one position (keyed) and if it has shifted you won't get a spark at all...

 

Thanks mrfikser, I ended up replacing HD original equipment electronic ignition with a Dyna S system. I read mixed reviews on it but it worked and bike runs, run good actually. Now it is time for the new threaad on why my Sporty pops out of neutral when I rev the engine.
